  • Entity (Concept) Categorization
  • Semantic Profiling of Human Tags at Social Bookmarking Sites
  • Biological Concepts and Relationships Extraction
  • Document Classification with Small Training Datasets
  • Context-sensitive Semantic Smoothing for Language Modeling Approach to Ad-hoc Text Retrieval
  • Information Visualization (VAST Competition)
  • Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) System Using Memory-based Learning
Research Assistant, working with Professor Hyoil Han at College of Information Science & Technology (IST), Drexel University, Winter 2004-05
Implemented a Java-based WSD system using Memory-based Learning (MBL) that incorporates a variety of lexical and world knowledge such as syntactic relation, collocations, surrounding words, POS, morphology, and selectional restrictions.
  • A Semantics-based Information Retrieval (IR) Model
Supervised by Professor Xia Lin at IST, Drexel University, Winter 2004-05
Proposed a model for semantics-based IR that uses triplet (concept-relation-concept) to index documents. A comparison with traditional keyword-based IR model and a case study are followed.
  • Information Extraction from Semi-structured Patient Record
Collaborating with Professor Hyoil Han at IST, Fall 2004-05
Proposed and implemented a system which uses three different approaches to extraction of medical terms (e.g. past medical history), numeric values (e.g. blood pressure), and categorical values (e.g. smoking behavior) respectively.
  • Automatic Acquisition of Linguistic Patterns for Conceptual Modeling
Collaborating with Nan Zhou and Prof. Il-Yeol Song at IST, Fall 2004-05.
Surveyed the representation of and the learning methods for linguistic patterns, and proposed the solution to automate the acquisition of linguistic patterns for conceptual modeling. The prototyped learning system is under development.
  • Visualization of UMLS Concepts
Research Assistant, working with Prof. Xia Lin at IST, Summer 2003-04
Implemented a web-based interface that visualizes the relationship of concepts in Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) using concepts co-occurrence counts.
  • Framework for Automated System Analysis
Collaborating with Nan Zhou and Prof. Il-Yeol Song at IST, Summer 2004
Suggested a framework that could automate the generation of class diagram from functional specifications by using domain ontology and linkage-based semantic analysis to identify concepts and their inter-relationships, and linguistic patterns to label those relationships.
  • Conceptual Modeling of Bioinformatics Data and Process Using UML
Supervised by Professor Il-Yeol Song at IST, summer 2003-04
Used Unified Modeling Language (UML) to model various data types for Pharmacogenetics and genetic studies, intuitively presenting the tri-relationships among genotype, phenotype, and environment.
  • Prediction of Sequence Alignment Algorithm by A Hybrid Method
Research Assistant, working with Professor Hyoil Han at IST, Drexel University, and Dr. Junwen Wang at University of Pennsylvania, Fall 2003-04.
Tested the idea of combining neural network and genetic algorithm to optimize the model that can predict the optimal sequence alignment method given a specific sequence.
  • Design of e-Currency and Trust Authority for Electronic Barter Market
Master thesis, Advisor: Professor Chongfeng Wu at Graduate School of Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, 1999-2002
Presented a business model of virtual barter market that addressed two core issues, the design of e-currency and the establishment of trust authority. Moreover, computer-based simulation technique was used to study the features of e-barter market.
  • Steel-making Process Modeling by Neural Network
Research Assistant, working with Dr. Bin Du at Research Institute of BaoSteel Corp, Shanghai, China, 2000.
Used back-propagation neural network to model the complicated steel-making process.
